Our
Mission
Danville
Foodstock is the Charter Chapter of Foodstock
Charities, a new organization that is rapidly spreading
across the U.S. We are proud that, through our efforts, Danville
has gained a new nickname - The little town that could.
Foodstock
Charities serves its chapter communities by serving food
- and hope! - to those in need. We believe
that there is no greater need than to provide food for one's
family. Our food drives and concerts benefit local food pantries,
with all proceeds going to the pantries we support. No one involved
in any of our projects is compensated in any form for their
work.
Foodstock
Charities promotes the philosophy of servant-leadership as the
best way to guide a just and caring society. We believe that
by helping those with the greatest need, we strengthen our community
from top to bottom. Numerous studies have shown that reducing
poverty and hunger benefit the community by reducing the need
for social services and instilling a sense of pride and fulfillment
in those who are served. In addition, communities suffer less
crime and other social ills, such as drug abuse, acoholism,
family violence and more.
At
Danville Foodstock our goal is to serve the greater Danville
area community with our programs:
- Benefit
concerts and food drives in support of the Danville Area Food
Pantry
- Sunday
Free Dinner Series
Danville
Foodstock seeks to serve as a servant-leader in our community,
demonstrating the effectiveness of servant-leadership through
our programs, and by using the servant-leadership management model
to guide our organization. In addition, we actively seek ways
to include Danville area students in our projects. This allows
us to introduce our youth to the concept of finding fulfillment
through service to others and encourage them to become servant-leaders
themselves.
As
support in the community increases, we will be able to serve more
people in need. Our current goals are:
- to raise
$52,000 annually for the Danville Area Food Pantry. In 2008,
we achieved 20% of our goal.
- to feed
1000 people each month through our Sunday Free Dinner series.
In April, 2009, we achieved 16.7% of our goal.
Our
outreach and promotional efforts are designed to raise awareness
in our community, encouraging broader participation in our programs,
especially in the business and religious communities. Our goal
is to minimize the barriers that separate various segments of
our community, whether those barriers be economic, theological
or social. We believe that by working together, we can create
a stronger, more prosperous community.
It
is important to note that our staff receives no compensation
for its work. Everyone involved is a "pure volunteer."
We do not do this for the money. We do it because we need
to. Following the advice of Ghandi, we believe that we must create
the change we wish to see in our society.
