Another Man's Blues

A note from Lane: I wrote this song after meeting the woman I wrote about in The Feast. After I met her, I began to see others on the street who were no different than you and I. I gained greater understanding that those in need are our brothers and sisters. They are not "less than", they are not unworthy of love and compassion.

In this song, the storyteller has finally had enough of being shunted aside and ignored. He's been begging for change so he could eat, and everyone passes him by, either ignoring him, or giving him dirty looks and angry words. Finally, he manages to stop someone long enough to ask for help.

He is your brother. He is no different than you. All he needs is for someone to care.

Excuse me, sir, can you spare a dime?
Could you help me out? Do you have the time?
I just need some food and they done closed down the old soup line

And it's turnin' cold, the air is getting' thin
I'm a bit concerned about the shape I'm in
'Cause I'll be sleepin' down underneath the old Jackson Street Bridge again

I had a simple life, I made honest pay
It was a hard ol' job but it paid my way
I had a lovin' wife who thought the world of me to share my every day

But it all went bad - my sweet baby died
On a quiet night - a single shot went wide
And bloody in my arms she kissed my cheek and then she said I love you, good-bye

See I'm a broken man, I'm a broken man
Ain't got no faith or pride
I'm a broken man, I'm a broken man
Lost my soul the day she died
And if you'd lived my life, really lived my life
Tell me what would you do?
Could you do better, man, better than I can
Living another man's blues?

So tell me now can you spare a dime?
Can you see the man under the dirt and grime?
See I need some food and they done closed down the old soup line
